Richard was born on September 7, 1939, to Herman and Frances (Dewitt) Fanslau in Benton Harbor. He completed his education at Lakeshore High School in 1958, marking his graduation as a member of the inaugural class in the school’s history. On February 6, 1965, he married the former Carolyn Lange in Bridgman. They shared 56 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on October 27, 2022.
Professionally, Richard dedicated nearly three decades to his role as Tool Room Supervisor at Paramount Die Casting in St. Joseph. Following this, he spent close to ten years at ICG, formerly Duwell, before retiring. In his youth, Richard cherished family camping trips, particularly at Hemlock Lake Campground in Marcellus. He also enjoyed working on hot rods, fishing, riding motorcycles and picked up a little golfing later in life. Richard really enjoyed a good western show and was an avid bowler. He played in numerous men’s leagues over the years and co-ed leagues with his wife, Carolyn.
Richard is survived by his son, Richard (Kathy) Fanslau, Jr., of Bridgman; daughter, Jennifer (Darrin) Fannin of Benton Harbor; granddaughter, Emma Fanslau of Bridgman; sister, Barbara (Larry) Kamman and brother, Herman “Butch” Fanslau. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Nancy (John) Baker, Janet (Bill) Hines and sister-in-law, Cathy Fanslau.
