Ida's Obituary

Ida M. Galbreath, 99, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023, twenty days before her 100th birthday, at CrownPointe of Stevensville with her family and the caring staff by her side.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 15, 2023, at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 2673 W. John Beers Rd., Stevensville, MI with Pastor Jesse Knox officiating. Interment will follow at Lincoln Township Cemetery, Stevensville. Visitation will take place from 4-7 pm on Thursday, December 14, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church or the RV Mustang Foundation. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.

Ida was born on December 28, 1923, to Albert and Minnie (Trapp) Harfert in Galien, MI. Ida graduated from New Troy High School and furthered her education through Western Michigan University, earning her Bachelor’s Degree. On October 2, 1948, she married William “Bill” Galbreath in Hartford.

Professionally, Ida dedicated over thirty years to teaching. Serving in many school districts, including Hartford, New Troy, Climax-Scotts and River Valley, where she retired in 1977. Ida was a member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stevensville and was involved in many areas throughout the community. She enjoyed gardening, especially her flower gardens and never missed a hair appointment. Ida coached basketball for a short time and was an avid basketball fan. She loved traveling and chaperoned many of her class trips, including several to Germany. Over the years, Bill and Ida took pride in hosting eight German exchange students and maintained lasting connections with them throughout their lives.

Ida is survived by her brother, Duane (Betty) Harfert; sisters-in-law, Arlene Harfert and Gloria Harfert; many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Minnie Harfert; husband of 64 years, Bill Galbreath and brothers, Raymond Harfert and Ralph Harfert.
