Ida 's Memory Wall
We encourage you to share your most beloved memories of Ida here, so that the family and other loved ones can always see it. Share your favorite stories or comment on those shared by others.
Upon my graduation from Hartford High School, I shared a sufficientcy apartment with "Miss Harfert.". While there, she dated my good friend, Bill Galbreath. Always looked forward to seeing them, which was usually on Memorial Day. Ida was a good and well-liked teacher at HHS.. Am sure she was lovingly greeted by "Good old Bill."

Ida was always so sweet. She and Bill were my Godparents. It is so sad that we lose track of the people that we were so close to at one time.

So sorry to hear that she left us only 20 days before her 100th birthday. This ever smiling American lady has affected the lives of so many people - especially those of the many students she introduced to the German language and the number of German exchange students she and Bill gave a home to for an entire year in the 1960s and 70s. They made it possible for us to experience the full scale of American life including many trips- all this at a time when overseas travel and exchange programs were not as common as today. I still am and always will be very grateful for all this. And I'll miss her terribly. Thank you Mom! Love Hella

Mrs. Galbreath was my English teacher at NTHS in 1954 and 1956. She started a love in me for the understanding of language (not just English) that still resides inside me. She taught me to understand how languages are stuctured and to use that skill to examine languages other than English. She taught me to love English in a way that has stuck with me all of my life. God Speed you, my dear English teacher.

Ida was a beloved faculty member at RVHS during the ten years I taught there. As the German teacher, her students playfully referred to her as "The Frau". She and Bill were always a lot of fun when the faculty gathered together at holiday parties and other occasions. May Ida rest in peace.

To Ida Galbreath, my American Mom: In June 1968 I arrived from Germany to finally meet my new American parents (Ida and Bill Galbreath). I was lucky to stay with them for a year as an exchange student. They accepted me like they would have any own children which they unfortunately did not have. I was allowed to call them Mom and Dad which I did up to now. They taught me all I had to know about the American way of life and good American English. It was wonderful how their entire family accepted me. We kept very close contact over all these years, visiting back and forth in Germany and the States. Even our three sons were like grandchildren to them. Fortunately we were able to talk on the phone; even three weeks ago we still chatted for a few minutes. Ida (Mom) was really like a second mother to me and I owe her so much. I always loved her and I miss her terribly. I will always keep a memory in my heart and I am very sad that I cannot attend the funeral. Volker K. Lauff
