Jan’s infectious smile and quick wit always made my day a little brighter no matter how stressful the day was, may our memories continue to brighten all of our days.

Our cousin Jan, a granddaughter of Richard and Carol Crego. The eleven children in this remarkable family are now all gone but they in turn have left children, our cousins, now scattered all across this country. We the cousins, did so much love our extended family - so much of it centered about magical Michigan. Those of our now advancing age will smile recollecting the reunions, Fisher Lake, the St. Joe and Portage Rivers, Silver Beach, Hoffman Pond, the Covered Bridge, Thompsons Landing and more. Our children and grand children are likely bored to tears when we recite these tales - the summers of our youth. Even the most hilarious escapades - and there were many in this wonderfully crazy family. No matter - we shall always cherish those days and by doing so we shall keep Jan alive and with us. There are a few advantages of getting old. Perhaps foremost is the realization that even the death of our most beloved wife, mother, father or even a child need not cripple us forever with grief. At some point we will be reminded of something that might make us laugh or bring a smile. Perhaps this is why we are allowed to remember days long past and not remember why we went to the store.

When I was growing up in Chicago I always looked forward to the annual Thanksgiving visit by uncle Fred, Gertie and Jan. What a wonderful time we had and what wonderful memories. But, after we moved to Ohio I only saw Fred and family at reunions. Then, after Fred and Gertie passed away we seldom saw Jan but when we did we were always so delighted to see her again. Jan was always smiling, happy and cheerful. She was a beautiful person. I am so glad that I have such wonderful memories of Jan and her parents. Bruce, I am very sorry for your loss but know that your memories of Jan will be a blessing to you.

Memories of my cousin go back to my childhood and especially to seeing her performances in her high school marching band: each year the band would come to Riverview Park in Chicago to perform. And I remember all those family gatherings in Michigan. But most of all, it is Jan's smile that I remember: the look that tossed love and joy to the world.

Saying goodbye to such a special friend as Jan is a difficult thing to do. It was such an honor for me to stand side by side to her in the handbell choir for many years. We shared many laughs that will never be forgotten. She will be missed.
